Hey all,

Heading to Leeds this friday (from Swindon) to see the wife and at present, a single to there via the trainline.com will cost me around £51 (a return will cost £58). On the 6th though I have to travel to Lincoln as i'm going there to collect my Uni results and talk to some of the lecturers. A single to Lincoln from Leeds is around £7.

I'm wondering if anyone on here would know if my booking an off-peak advanced return I could travel to Leeds, and then use the return half of the ticket to get back to Swindon from Lincoln. The route would be Lincoln --> Nottingham --> Cheltenham --> Home whereas from Leeds its Leeds --> Bristol --> Home.

Trying to keep the spend on tickets to a minimum at present but its hard work. Does anyone know if i'll be able to use my ticket like this?

Used to be able to do this. The only problem I can think of is getting through barriers etc. Not sure if they would allow you to get through the barriers

I think when I did the same, I got on on the same line but closer to my destination.

Actually it might be alright... unless there are restrictions on the ticket - i.e you have to travel on a certain rail provider, you could actually get to Leeds via Cheltenham aswell but it might take longer.

Its the whole "any route but London" thing thats confusing me. I know it says any, but does it really mean it? I've been shafted by train companies before and its not nice on the wallet.

Half of me is tempted to just try it anyway though...

Its a shout, though even if it is allowed I can see them turning around and saying "no". Just thought i'd ask incase anyone has had a similar experience that worked out well :p.

Officially no. The ANY routeing on a ticket means Any permitted route as specified by the routing guide, a somewhat complicated document.

A Leeds - Swindon ticket is not valid via Nottingham, so I'm afraid the offical answer is no. Whether the guard on the train would have that much knowledge of the routing guide is another matter.

Firstly don't use trainline, iirc they charge a booking fee. Use www.nationalrail.co.uk then select anyone which doesn't charge at the end - eg Virgin/First. Who you choose to pay through doesn't matter one jot. They all use the same backend system, it's so ridiculous.

Split-ticketing is a good strategy - try and break your journey in two at a station on the way. I don't think your little-convoluted route would work though. I went Bristol-Blackpool recently and got the cost down from £50 to £35 via spliting at Birmingham :)
