I see the appication i used to use ("MyRail Lite") can no longer be used ("discontinued as our license to distribute real time train information from national rail enquirier for live departure boards has not been renewed") and the official one is a fiver. any free alternatives? fail to see why i should pay a fiver just to see when trains are due. especially if i have to buy a ticket on the train anyway.

Buying a train ticket and paying for a convenient service are two separate things. You obviously want to be able to quickly check train times on the go and someone has obviously priced that value at £5.

Regardless, iRail is a free app that does what you want.

its £5 to national rail though, its their official one.
ill try irail later see if that still works. if not that macbox link looks good

My 'Trains' app still seems to work ok, it's showing the current trains from Paddington to Reading anyway.

While I spent a fair while cursing when myrail lite disappeared, I eventually tried out the official app and it is very good. It adds a few features that are really nice (next train home - what a godsend!).

I'm not clear if they refused to renew the license for myrail lite to get data from them so they could monopolise the app store with their own paid for app (which would be really bad form) or if the (free) myrail lite developers couldn't justify paying for it anymore.

£5 is a bit much really but it's a polished app and works really nicely. On balance I'd recommend it...

that is a bit pants when a company pulls something like that... train times are something you can get free on the net, so obviously you're just paying for the convenience of not having to look on the net for the info... which i agree is fine, but to pull someone elses free app just so you can sell yours is a bit unfair IMHO, and because of this i wont be buying the app... nose spite face ;)

It's superb, the train home thing is a fantastic feature. Saves lots of messing about trying to work out times.

Well, I don't know the details but I've yet to see conclusive evidence they did pull the other app rather than it pulling itself. I *think* the license to use the live departure data costs money and making a free app which requires that license would be unfeasible. If they did - very bad form and (this makes me think they didn't) possible illegal.

As said repeatedly now, I'd just think of it as a pro version of the old app - it has more features and is very reliable.

I also love that it told me the platform for my train out of london 20 minutes before it went up on the departure boards. I was sitting down reading the paper on the train before the bank holiday scrum to get on started in earnest - that was worth £5!
