My work are expecting me to do some sort of management training course, just received an email telling me when it's starting, every Tuesday evening, for 3 hours for a year.

As it's out of hours what recompense do I have? Can they force me to do it? I don't recall seeing anything in my contract.

Surely this is actually of great benefit to you? I would image that course costs them a hefty amount to send you on.

Although I can't deny I wouldn't be a bit annoyed at losing 3 hours out of every Tuesday evening for so long.

Anyway, to answer your question. Raise it with your manager.

Three Hours of Training... every Tuesday for a whole Year.

Thats a bit of a **** take IMO, especially if you arn't paid for it.

What sort of Training is this??

Training should be during work time imo. Unless you have agreed otherwise, I wouldn't have it forced on me but at the same time if it is expensive then it might be best to not turn it down.

I work at a College so it's probably not costing anything like commercial rates. It was my manager that passed it on. Was looking to get pre-armed before I go to speak to HR.

Your company are sending you on a year long management training course?

I'd assume you'd get some sort of qualification at the end of it.

I dont think you realise how bloody lucky you are.

be careful there is not some clause in your contract that ties you to the company for x amount of time due to the training though, my last contract made me pay back any training costs for courses taken in my last 6 months of employment

I am being sent on the APM project management training course in january and my company shall pay for the course entry and the the time I am there + my petrol to and from London/any hotel bills. My company is pretty good like that but I know a lot aren't. If the company want you to go then they should really pay I guess.

My two pence worth.......

1) It is great that they are sending you on a training course like this, exactly the same layout as the one i was going to do and at the end you get a CHARTERED MANAGERS qaulification (or something similar) well worth it. Don't forget this when raising issues with your new boss

2) Yes they should have explained this when offering the job and going through contracts. If its not in your contract then they cannot FORCE you to do it. Normally an arrangement like this will be noted somewhere.

I think you should sleep on it and then have an informal chat with them about it :) All obstacles can be overcome

I think what's getting my goat about it is;

a) it was agreed by senior management in May and we're notified the week before it's due to start. I've got a young family and a wife who already has committments. They just expect you to drop everything and do it.

b) there's no detail on the course, how long it's for, what you get at the end of it. Do you get compensated for food etc. By the time I left my work and got home, it would be time for me to go to the course so I wouldn't have time to eat!

Just tell them that on Tue evening you play WoW and that you can't miss raids those days :)

But seriously I think this training while 3 hours every week might be a huge benefit for you, you might even get promoted to a management position with a nice pay rise.

My advice.....

Get a list of questions together like the ones above, send a copy to management as a basis for a meeting. Organize a time and date and discuss with them :D

I'm already in a management role!
