Firstly thought I'd stick this topic in here as felt it's more relevent to the knowledgable posters here :)

My current government department will be closing in 12-14 months time, and as a consequence of this we have all been given a bit of training money to go and do something to help us along.

Only caveat apart from the cost is it has to be taken before the end of this financial year which is a shame as the course I really want to do doesn't run until June.

Now I've got a slight dilemma on which course to choose!

It's out of either the Certified Ethical Hacker or the ISEB certificates in 'Enterprise and Solution Architecture'.

Slightly different things I know, I'm currently in an infrastructure and security role and would like to move to either a more in depth infosec/audit role or an architect type position (hate using that term, as bad as using engineer for things :p).

Got a feeling that the CeH course feeds my fun side, I think it'll be something I'll enjoy doing, but am a little skeptical on on the benefits of doing this. I've got my CISSP which covers the other side of security so maybe having something a little more practical would be nice, but will it help?

And on the other side the ISEB courses would give me some good knowledge on the architect side of things to fill in the gaps and hopefully would help me along the way. Also I think this kind of thing would help most high level design roles, but guess I could be wrong.

Have got a very good deal on the above courses so they both come within budget.

Others here have gone down the Prince2 route but tbh it's not floating my boat, another one for self study if need be.

Frustrating that it's time limited, as said I'd like to go do my CISA but that's past the cut off date so will be self studying that one. But at the same time it's training, so anything will be good!

So is anyone here in either of my preferred roles, or can offer any advice as to which they would think would be good to do?

Thanks :)

meh just checked the dates and the ISEB stuff falls on a week where the other 2 guys in my team are already out on training.

Looks like decision has been made for me.

*edit* scrap that, the guy just phoned me to say there were other dates too, dilemma back on!

Well we need something to make up for our poor wages compared to private sector :p (that is so a joke by the way and not to be taken seriously, going on from previous debates on here :) )

To be honest the figure given to us was pretty small, going on list prices you couldn't really get anything decent with it :) Plus was owed some still as part of my contract.

However one training provider always give me good deals and he's come up trumps this time round.

Think I recommended him to someone else on here a while ago who got a nice discount, things like 2 x 5 day MS courses for around £1000.

Still nice to have this option though, just got to make the choice.

Might seem obvious to some as they are in different areas, but both things I'm interested in.

Yeah I'm finding it tricky deciding, pretty certain I'll go for the ISEB courses. Asked a few people who are already in the areas I'd want to be in and they say in the long run that it probably has more value.

Am hoping to get a new job before being made redundant though, am lucky enough to have a pretty long time period before it happens which should be enough time to get sorted.

I also heard the CEH content was quite dated.

Well I'm in security now and it's what I like doing, but it's not for everyone. Especially die hard techies, of which I am not.

Gone for the ISEB course, think it'll compliment things well and will still do my CISA either June or Dec.

Actually had a few calls about some jobs today so hopefully something will happen there.

I love all the security type stuff, just finding it hard finding anything local.

ISEB course being booked up, might have to stick a few quid towards it as think it's about £100 over budget, but the training co gave me nigh on 50% off so not too bothered. Looking forward to it actually.

Job market is slow down here, but there's stuff elsewhere but would have to move/live away in the week. I just hit all the job sites plus any local companies directly to see if they are hiring.

Well ISEB are the examinations arm of the BCS, my main reason for picking this was that it's a nightmare to self study for the ISEB ones, whereas if I fancied the CEH I could probably self study it. The popular ISEB ones are the software testing ones, but you don't really hear much about the others. I remember almost doing the software asset management one a while ago as I was pretty heavily into that for a bit.

Plus the training provider I had to use for this round of training doesn't do the best CEH course. One of my good friends is doing the CEH in a few weeks so will grab his course notes/book to use.

I wanted to do the CEH just becuase it'd have been more fun, but this will hopefully be a bit more handy for me as I'm job hunting for the areas I'm looking at. My CISSP should cover me for the security side of things for now :)

Just going over the first nights questions/work and if the exam is like this then it hopefully won't be too bad.

And for once my hotel room isn't a dive which is nice!

It'll fly by don't worry!

Also remember getting another cert like the Sec+ knocks a year off the requirements (it did when I got it anyway) if you're desperate :p

VMWare wasn't in budget, on the ISEB course at the moment :) Plus it's more suited to what I'm trying to do at the moment.

Got the results today, easily passed the intermediate but failed the practioner by one lousy mark :(

Will look to retake it as I was so close, but really gutted :(

CEH helps with more hands on security roles that involve pen testing type stuff, it's pretty specialist though and that was one of the reasons I chose not to do it.

Along with the dated course content

Retook the one I failed a couple o fweeks ago, found out today that I passed it :)

Annoying I didn't get it first time round as it meant a day out and 400 mile roudn trip to retake at my expense, but all done now.
