Type in Address Bar \\NAMEOFPC

Push Enter, should work =)

Really? As simple as that? I have stuff I wanna transfer off a laptop onto my PC. I have Win XP Pro on the PC, and Vista Home Premium on the laptop..

Do you have a flash drive? (USB stick) If so, use that - it's a lot less hassle.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but assuming you simply have the two computers (and no router) you'll need a crossover ethernet cable, not your usual patch cable, in order to connect the two together.

Correct, you need a cross over cable.

Sorry, you're out of luck, cos you're using Vista.

See here.

Note that this feature [networking over Firewire] is not supported in Windows Vista.

How much data are you attempting to transfer? Seriously, use a USB2 flash drive, it's a whole lot easier.

Uh, it's going to be about 60GB in total :/

I know you can get USB crossover cables but there's no point in my paying that much for one when I have two USB2 4GB drives. <-That might be slower but for the sake of £30 I may do it one afternoon.

Edit - Thanks for the info and link btw :)
Edit 2, actually OcUK do some for the price of two pints. That's not so bad :)

If there are a lot of files then you'd be much better off using a USB2 Flash drive.

Actually, it's not as crazy as you might think... 100Mbit/sec is only 12.5Mb/sec, a speed which good USB2 flash drives can easily exceed nowadays. For example, the OCZ Rally2 writes at up to 15Mb/sec, and reads at nearly twice that. :D

If, on the other hand, you're using Gbit NICs, then that's quite a different matter. :)

I must admit transferring 60Gb of files via flash drive is going to take a while... I was thinking around 10Gb or so - I had to do a similar process with around 7Gb of files, and first used the wireless network but found it was far too slow, so used my flash drive.

But with a flash drive that 12.5 is the whole shabang, with USB dongles you have to download at 15MB/s THEN upload at 23MB/s not to mention using a wheelbarrow to carry enough sticks to make up 60GB

You just need a CAT5 crossover cable as said. I think both PCs/laptops need to be on the same workgroup but with a different name, eg WORKGROUP\PC and WORKGROUP\LAPTOP would work.

A USB2 disk might be quick but you'd have to unplug it from one PC and plug it into another, wait for it to be detected, copy the files over then unplug it and plug it back into the first PC.

Takes a few seconds at least to do that, whilst the CAT5 cable is still going. :)
