I am about to put a personal plate on my recently purchased Audi, and have both the Certificate of Entitlement (V750) and my V5C ready.

If I do not retain the existing plate, what happens when I want to sell the car and take off my personal plate?

Are there any positives on retaining the plate, because it will cost £155 for 3 years and I don't know how much more after that.

The positives to retaining the plate are keeping your plate that you paid for :L If you transfer it straight to another vehicle it's £30 I think, or £80. One of them :p

Assuming they don't sell it in the meantime they will put the old plate back on as default.

They don't sell the old plate. It will go back on the car should the cherished plate be transferred to another vehicle.

I just called DVLA and found out that I don't need to retain it because it "just sits on a shelf" until I want to take my personal plate off the vehicle :D

This is sort of correct. I don't think you're guaranteed to get the original plate back but it's not really an issue as it'll still be one related to the age of the car.

Also, it's £80 to transfer a plate straight to another car, or £105 if you put it onto retention for (up to) a year; which includes the transfer fee.
