following a balls up i lost my bookmarks, i managed to recover the htm/html file that has them all on.

however the 1.5 file i recovered is a HTM file, and the firefox 2 file is HTML

i tried every thing i can think of, saveing the contents into the new file doesnt seem to work and theres no import from file option

My backed-up Firefox 1.5 bookmarks file is html, not htm. (I am using 2.0 now but I still have an old 1.5 bookmarks.html file in another folder)

So renaming it to .html doesn't work?

foxmarks is an excellent extension which synchs bookmarks
great if you have multiple PCs too...

right, solved the problem.

what didnt work:

renaming the old (1.5) file to the new (2.0) file then deleting the new new(2.0)
opening both files in notepad and copying the contents of the old into the new.

what did work:
open the old (1.5) file in notepad and copy the contents, the close...then open notepad (dont create a notepad file, open the program via the start menu), paste the info into notepad...then go save as and change the file type to 'all files' and the name to the same as the new bookmarks name and add '.html' at the end. save and copy the file in... if it doesnt work, uninstall firefox, repeat and reinstall
