Dear Motorolans and Androidfans,

I’ve been volunteered to help a neighbour copy all her contacts/photos/apps from an old G4 to a shiny new G60. The problem is that I didn’t speak Android and the last Motorola phone I used was an A1000 running on Symbian.

From 10 minutes of Googling, the Windows/Mac OS tool Wondershare Mobile Trans looks way less hassle to use than Motorola Migrate, but I’d like some advice from people that have used either.

Thanks in advance.

When setting the new phone up it should ask her if she would like to restore from an old phone, this usually works with app data, texts and call history.

For contacts, if it's synced to her Google account, she should see them here: https://contacts.google.com/ . Signing into the same account will sync them over to the new phone.

For photos, use Google Photos to back all of it up. Again, she can find them here to make sure they're backed up: https://photos.google.com/ . If she wants them offline, you can copy the DCIM folder on the old phone directly onto the new phone. Bare in mind the DCIM folder usually only holds photos taken with the camera, photos from other apps (eg WhatsApp) will store them else where.

There will be a few apps that won't use Google's backup and restore services and use their own one, for example WhatsApp. WhatsApp's backup can be found in WhatsApp's settings -> Chats -> Chat backup. Force backup that and once it's done she can sign in on her new phone, where it will see the backup and asks if you would like to restore.
