I've been trying to transfer a clients Domain name across to another provider which is a lot better for e-mail. We asked the previous provider easily.co.uk to confirm when this was done so we knew where everything was.

However, I've just had our client on the phone asking why his e-mail no longer works and logging in to easily shows that the domain no longer exists with easily and no doubt the mail either...

Going over to where it's supposed to be transferred to, it's showing up in the panel as "not complete" so no access to mail that side either.

What's the general gist of what's going on here? Can we expect to be without mail for 24 hours or so as he gets orders through tonight for dispatch first thing tomorrow moring so could be quite bad if we can't get access.

Thanks guys, could be a nasty night for me this one, aarggh.

Domain transfers can be difficult I'm afraid - it is viewed as such a minor thing but can cause a lot of downtime.
Especially as you should remember that any domain transfer can take up to 7 days to complete!

You haven't mentioned what type of domain it is - .uk domains transfer in a different fashion to .com or .net for example.
The key is in the zone records for the domain.
What I am guessing is that the old host has transferred your domain name and at the same time deleted all zone records for it.
Your new host is still in the process of taking full control and moving it into your Control Panel and until it does you can't add any new records.

Speak to your new hosts and explain the urgency and see if there is anything they can do to speed things up.
If it is a .uk domain then as long as your old host has changed the IPSTag then it should only take a matter of minutes for your new host to get full control.
If it is a .com or .net this can take a little longer, especially if the domain is moving from one top-level registra to another (basically there are only about 4 sellers of .com, .net addresses and all of these hosts simply resell for one of these 4. It can get slow if your moving from the reseller of one to the reseller of another).

Get your new hosts involved ASAP as the lack of email would indicate a lack of Zone records and that is only somethign your new hosts can now fix.
