I didn't imagine this would be a problem, but it is!!

The problem stems from the 32-bit Vista on my laptop and the 64-bit Vista on my desktop (I think). Has anyone had any problems similar to this and know of a fix? - I'm thinking there may be some sort of patch somewhere to fix this!

Any help, as always, will be much appreciated!

Cheers

I know this isn't really answering your question, but what exact problems are you having? Also do you not need a different type of USB cable? Or is it just network cables where you need a crossover/patch wire?

According to HP (my laptop is HP!) all I should need is a USB cable, then the laptop should show in my desktop's computer bit - as a removable drive I'm assuming!

The problem is nothing at all happens. None of the computers recognise that anything has been plugged into them! - Both USB ports work, I've checked!

The USB Cable normally has a large Bulge in the Middle, think its a Nulled USB Cable like you used to get Nulled Modem Cables.

I'm not 100% sure TBH but don't think a simply USB cable works, I would use Ethernet.

hmmm,ok. I asked HP support and they said a USB cable would work. I didn't think it would to be honest, but as they'd said it I went with it, although this isnt always the best thing to do with 'technical' support teams.

I'm wanting to synchronise a couple of folders between my laptop and desktop, which is the reason for all this. Would using a Ethernet cable let me do this using synctoy 2.0 or something similar?

Yes if it's a crossover but there may be a simpler way. Do both the laptop and desktop connect to the web through a common router? If so you already have a network connection between them, just run the file sharing wizard thingy at both ends and you're away.

oh dear, what an idiot I am!!:o

They are both on the same network, desktop via Ethernet and laptop wirelessly. Are there any programs that can sync over a network, and will I have to allow sharing of these folders etc. I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to networking and sharing folders!

cheers
