I am building a new pc for a friend with Vista Home Premium. Their old pc was running XP and has many issues with trojans, pop ups and other nasties. They really need all their pictures and music files transferring from their old HDD to their new HDD in the new PC. Is there a safe way to do this without transferring all of the bad stuff too?

So just hook that HDD up to the new PC and scan the entire drive for viruses etc and then transfer the files?

Probably the best method, the drive won't be able to infect the host PC unless you run an infected executable or copy an infected file across, if it's just things like images and documents then a quick scan should do.

I was planning on doing that with a nice up to ate anti virus, a full scan seems the only way to be sure.
