Transferring files help

So i have a new os in my pc and i want to transfer my old my documents to my new os hdd but it seems windows 7 is protecting them how do i transfer them onto my windows 8.1? Do i need to use a external hdd as a middleman ? ive also tried putting the files on my secondary hdd thats on both os's but it wont let me see or use the files in windows 8.1.

Sounds like you need to take ownership of the files. I have used this registry hack before to give the option upon right clicking the file or folder..
