Hello,

I've bought a hard drive caddy and hooked it up to my computer via an eSata cable. My motherboard supports 3Gb/s and I'm using the Icy Box caddy.

How long would you suggest it takes to transfer a 1GB file? I've got a 600MB movie that's taking 13 minutes to be transferred. Is there any reason why it could be taking so long?

Both drives are NTFS formatted.

600MB over eSATA should take less than 30s so there's something very wrong somewhere.

Is there anything else accessing either the source or target drive while the copy operation is happening?

Is this a straight drag and drop copy in Explorer?

Have you checked the speed of each disk with HDTach or HDTune?

eSATA should give you the full data transfer rate of the HDD, using a 320GB 7200.10 in an Icy Box connected via eSATA I was getting an Average read in HDTach of 68MB/s. :)

I've just ran HDTach and got the same. I've been using SyncBack to backup files so that's what was transferring the files.

I've turned off Google Desktop (installed yesterday) and have transferred 6GB in 3 minutes :)

Didn't realise Google Desktop would eat so much resources! Indexs files at random times too
