Can you use a memory card to transfer gamer profiles from one Xbox 360 to another like you could on the old Xbox? I want to get my mates profile transferred to my Xbox without invalidating it on his Xbox (as the recover gamer tag process suggests) so we can play some coop on various games (and I’m guessing, getting the coop achievements at the same time). Since we don't have 2 copies of the game we can’t do it over live so doing it locally is the only option.

Also if there is any other way of doing this without a memory card and without invalidating it on his Xbox suggestions would be appreciated as I'd rather not pay £17 for a memory card just for this problem.

You can probably go through the recover gamercard process which will negate the need for a memory card.

This is what I did on the xbox when I wanted to trancfer my account.

If you are using the memory card IIRC you move the gamertag to the memory card. So you (or your mate) would have their gamertag on the memory card and the other will be on the console. You then need to trancfer it back to its original console when you are done. <-- I'm sure I have taken something very simple and made it sound hard

Well the recover gamercard is the route im trying to avoid since the 360 says it was invalidate the account on any other xbox but the one you are recovering it on, which i guess will delete all his saves?

I have not tried it on the 360 so I can't comment on that.
However they said the same with the xbox, and I saw no adverce effects.
