So I just sold my car and was unable to find the v5 so I've been looking at how to transfer ownership to the buyer. I've read from several sources that I should inform the DVLA in writing, by post that I've sold it and give them the buyer's name and address. Then wait up to 4 weeks for confirmation that it has gone through.
I've also read that the buyer needs to get a v62 form and pay £25 to apply for a new v5. So is it either/or? Or do we both need to do these steps to complete the transfer? Meaning, I notify them first then the buyer can apply with the v62 form to register it in his name? Or will he automatically receive the new v5 after I've sent the DVLA the letter informing them of the sale? Seems strange that we would have to do both.

Being pedantic, the V5 is not proof of ownership. When you sell a car, both parties should sign a document that transfers ownership, like a receipt.

tbh as feek said the ownership is down to the receipt. when i was trade buying cars from salvage we either applied for a document and paid the 25 at the post office, or if we sold the car too quick we gave the new owner the 25 and got them to fill the v62 in themselves.

that said some people would avoid a car however good it was if it didnt have a document.
