i have a 2019 2.0 transit custom. when i accelerate i notice there's a whirring noise. it's most noticable in 1st and 2nd gear, though it may be i can't hear it as much in 3rd gear because the engine over powers it at that point.

i took it to a garage who diagnosed it. i trust them for the most part, used them for 10 years, and they have often done work for free, however they said it was bearings gone on the alternator. wanted £800 to do the work, however dad managed to change this pretty easily. unfortunately that didn't fix the issue, so we put the alternator back so not to waste money.

i'm now a bit stuck as i can't really go back to the garage and ask them to look again and tell them thanks for the free diagnosis, but i want and did it myself, now what's the issue.

the noise is louder in the morning when i first get going, and i'd say it does sound like some sort of bearing issue, however i'm not wishing to waste money after money replacing everything.

hoping someone on here might have some suggestions.

one thing i noticed yesterday, was that towards the end of the noise, the noise instantly stops, consitently every time, as though before whatever is spinning comes to a natural stop, a brake has applied to it. but we're talking literally right before it's about to stop.

i should also add, this happens even when stationairy and not in gear so assume it's not a gearbox issue, but only when reving.

Check the AC compressor, sounds like the clutch kicking in and out when it's on and either the bearing is shot or the clutch is breaking up.
Turn the AC off and test or go back to basics and place the end of a screw driver/stethoscope on the compressor and the other end to your ear, you'll easily hear if it's the bearing.
Or just take the belt off and see if the noise goes away.

Yup, the belt that also runs the AC compressor, it’ll only take a few minutes to see if it makes a difference.
Try turning the AC off first and trying it to see if the noise goes away.

OK thanks.

One thing we noticed when we replaced the alternator, was that the AC just wouldn't come back on after wards. It was only when I finally drove home that it then kicked in about 2 minutes down the road, and then appears to work fine since, however the weather being so bad I've not used the cooling of the AC enough to sya if it's back to fine.

Did you get the noise sorted out, I have a similar problem and I've already changed the alternator pulley and idler pulley
Yes. Thanks for reminding me to update this.

I had the wet cam belt changed and this solved the issue. Cost of £860 direclty with ford.

Check if yours has a wet cam belt, and if unfortunately so, when you're due to replace it as its worth getting done early.

I should add the noise ford mechanic suggested was due to the pump being clogged with bits of the belt, so if yours is making the noise, you may need to replace soon regardless of how close to the mileage/time

Thanks for the reply, I have had the wet belt done at a similar price to what you paid but I've still got the annoying noise. It's not always there. It's comes and goes but so irritating when you can't find the issue.
Thanks Matt.
