Transition lenses - are they any good?

It is new glasses time, and I have been considering getting a pair with transition lenses - ie the lenses that darken in response to the light.

It is +£75 for standard transition lenses, and +£150 for the kind that work in a car. I think I would go for the latter, I don't like switching between glasses and sunglasses in the car!

I was wondering if any of you guys have this type of lens and if so while you recommend?

Why were they annoying? Did they take a long time to go back to clear?
