Transparency and Photoshop...

Did a search for this and found the finished product but no explanation. Tried a few tutorials but nothing.....

I just want to incorporate a logo onto a background, its a white background at the moment. Even If I save it as transparent and import the image it still is white as background. I tried the magic wand to rid the white bits but it looks very blurry/tatty and still some white marks around the edges.

Anyone have any solutions for this? or alternatives so it can be transparent and fit nicely onto a background?

Thanks in advance.

If the background is white it has a colour/hue, so is opaque. In photoshop if the background is chequered grey blocks then it is transparent.

Although as you say, the magic wand tool leaves things tatty.. either fiddle with the tolerance and smooth the selection or copy the logo onto a background and change its layer style to darken or similar, that should make the white disappear.. i think..

what version is it? CS2 or elements
just wondering because with elements 4 you get the magic extractor tool, kind of like the magic wand but it can touch up the edges too
