Does anyone have experience of transporting bikes inside large vans? The idea worries me because I envisage it falling over.

I guess you need to secure it properly.

Any advice?

Cheers,

I used to transport mine on a trailer.

Make sure the engine is left in gear, and use a cable tie to hold the front brake on. Then it needs to be completely secured. In a van I would have it well strapped up.

I brought my BROS home in a sprinter. You just need to secure it firmly to the side of the van with some ratchet straps and some more to prevent it rolling forwards and backwards. Bring some rags to shove between the van and bike to protect the paint. Its much easier to use a trailer but a van does the job :)

Done this plenty of times.

Firstly, make sure the van is big enough;)

Then use these:

Whilst PRESSING DOWN the front forks, tighten the ratchets whilst they are over the bike. Make sure the front brake is also secure, using a rope/tie etc

This should secure the bike enough. I use one on each handlebar.

Cheers :)

Most racers transport their bikes in vans so don't worry about it falling over. Just put the bike in gear and gently cable tie the front brake on. Some people also put the rear brake on although unless you are excelerating hard in the van this isn't needed, more important to have the front on to stop it flying into the cabin if you need to brake the van hard. Strap both bar ends down with seperate ratchet straps and then use a single ratchet over the seat unit. Make sure you only compress the forks a bit and not fully down as sustained compression can cause them to leak past the fork seals. Just use your judgement as to when it is tight, give the bike a shake and see if it moves enough to fall over.

Thank you very much gents, very helpful.

No I don't have a paddock stand. Maybe that would be a worthy investment.

Cheers,

if you have a bike get one. very useful for servicing.

i always use one in the van. put it on paddock stand in middle of van with front wheel against headboard. then strap it down or to the sides of the van with 2 straps at the front and 2 at the rear.

always done it this way. :)

alternatively put a quilt against the side of the van, lean it up against it and strap it to it. remember to strap the wheels to the side to stop the slipping out.

Good man, thanks very much.

Carted my mates speed triple down from london no probs in my old mans transit.
Just ratchet strapped the bugger in good and tight in all directions :)

I had a new bike delivered at the weekend and the guy had it on its sidestand, the front brake was cable tied, it was in gear and strapped front and back to stop it moving round too much.

Right, gonna get hold of some ratchet straps.

Next worry is getting the bike into the van. What do people do, ride it up a thick board?

sold my NC30 yesterday :( went in the back of a van, but it was held upright with an ABBA stand, then tie downs front and back to stop it moving.

BINGO;)

When i didnt have one it took three of us to lift my CBR600RR in and out....heavy!

Cheers :)

My friend had his RS50 carried in a Renault Espace.. but thats just a RS50 ...

Haha that's impressive. I'm not sure I'll squeeze a 500 into my Octavia estate :D

Gonna go with the cable tie and lots of ratchet straps and rope option. Possibly a paddock stand if I can find one locally.

Paddock stand is probably not best unless it's one that cups the swingarm completely or has bobbins. If it were to slip off the stand then the straps would all be loose and the bike would fall over. If you strap it down without the stand its one less thing to go wrong and just as safe.

We always transport my motocross in my dads van we just use one off those rope thingys above and have it on it's stand. It doe not move.
