I think transporting a computer a couple of hundred miles in a car ended up killing the gpu.
It was on its side and a bit padded but at the other end the gpu was stone dead. I put it down to the card being long and heavy and not appreciating being jolted over the 4-5 hour trip.
Doing it again I'd remove the gpu and pack it separately also the same with any really big heatsink on the CPU.

EXPANDING FOAM bags!!!!
use one, close the case panel on it. let it expand then safe to go! or just take out the GPU- also do you have a heavy larger CPU cooler?
I also tend to lay them flat
