Travel Alone

I'd say the opposite - worth it if you can avoid the back pack places.

The best moments I had travelling alone was mingling with the locals rather than other foreigners.

But if you are rubbish at meeting people then it will be hard for someone to do that with locals. It's unavoidable in backpacking type places. You would have to actively try avoiding people in such places.

I guess it depends where you go. Places like US & Australia maybe so, but second and third world countries you would probably stand out and meeting locals will be easier.

It depends on your personality really. I've done a few holidays solo, including Spring Break in Cancun. Had a great time on each solo trip. When you go solo you can do what you want to do when you want to do it. If you want to meet new people you can and if you don't you can keep to yourself.

I've spent lots of time away with work. Travelling alone has its perks but for some reason our memories are biased towards fun that is shared with people we care for. :D

I'm about to go to Thailand for 2 weeks on my won. I'm used to travelling alone with work a lot so the aspect of being alone and having dinner on my own and so on doesn't bother me. It will still be an interesting experience to actually holiday alone though.

As long as people don't assume I'm a sex tourist I'm not really bothered :p

When do you go? I fly out next week!

Makes no sense.

I'd have to. My family and friends are very uncultured. Whereas my idea of heaven is visiting historic places like Rome and Athens, they detest it and would rather spend two weeks dossing on a beach. Something I would find mind numbingly dull.

of course it doesn't, you are posting in a thread titled Travel Alone. I just prefer sharing my trips, that's all.

I'm sure you'll have an amazing time but the 6 days in Sydney tagged on at the end is random. Presumably you've been to Australia before or you only want to see Sydney? Seems like an awfully long way to go.

I'm not traveling alone.

My point was that one can be happy without sharing. Listening to a nice bit of music on your own can make you happy, for example!

Mid Sept for me, I only have a vague plan, I'm going to wing most of it I think.

Ah, I'll be back by then. I can't wait to go, spending a couple of nights in Bangkok then heading south.

I know there are things that are better done alone but I don't think travelling is one of them.
I think we are thinking of different scenarios though. A cruise alone would be awful IMO, but a backpacking trip or safari in a group of people you don't know would be fine.

I'm sort of going alone, yet not quite, to Tanzania in September to have a crack at Kilimanjaro (+ mt meru).

It is with an organised group so I'm not really alone but I'm joining as a lone traveller. I did meet most of my group though in July and they seem alright.

It would be nice to have a mate or group of mates to go with, but I guess sometimes if you really want to do something you've just got to get out there. We've all got a life to live
