Travel Insurance whilst on NHS waiting list

My daughter (18) is going to travel round Europe for 4 weeks with friends when she had finished her exams.

Since November, she has been on an NHS waiting list to look at her painful periods. As a non urgent referral we've been told to expect a wait of several months.

As a result I simply cannot find any options for travel insurance. Every single one refuses cover once you tick "currently on a waiting list for a consultation or investigation".

Any ideas or suggestions?

There are 7.6 million people on NHS waiting lists at the moment - is it really the case that none of them can get any travel insurance?

What about these guys?

Went through the quote process and got "If you are awaiting an initial diagnosis for symptoms you are currently experiencing we are unable to provide cover at all until you have a confirmed diagnosis."

So that would be on a waiting list then.

This is the issue I hit again and again.

Surely you cannot expect them to insure you against something that hasn't been diagnosed, that could run up ridiculous medical bills and they haven't been able to quote against risk

Maybe you'll have to pay for a private diagnosis for peace of mind, Bupa or something.

Makes sense to me that medical insurers won't give medical cover if you say there's an undiagnosed medical issue.

I can see why it could be difficult to cover this circumstance. If you had some symptoms, couldn't see anyone on the NHS, so decided to go abroad to get treatment under the guise of it being a holiday, what would stop you doing that?

Probably dodged a bullet looking at the trust pilot reviews anyway.

Just been looking around as I have possibly some medical conditions to declare coming up.

These are 5 star Defaqto which is the best I also looked for peoples stories who have actually claimed on the insurance when picking.

You're allowed to go on holiday without insurance. This is about wanting insurance but the insurers hating that you have a ? over a medical issue.

Won't a G/EHIC cover her? Sure it would only be state hospitals but at least it's something if she gets into difficulty.

Then just get normal insurance for everything else.

She has a GHIC card which will cover her for most stuff. If she had a clearly diagnosed condition it would be easy. It's because she is waiting for tests/diagnosis that she is being turned down.

To be honest most of the countries she is visiting have health services in a far better state than the poor old NHS.

Appreciate the help so far!

yeah, insurers not only will not cover an undiagnosed medical condition, but many will then also not cover you for pre-existing medical conditions whilst you have an undiagnosed one. I had this problem last year, where I have several pre-existing issues, and was waiting for an diagnosis for an unassociated issue.

I normally do a 12 month policy, but in this instance I did a 1-off policy. I spoke over the phone to an insurer who said it was a common issue, and they gave me details of someone (I think it was the british insurance association), and after speaking to them for a while, they advised allclear as far as I remember. For something like this, you will need to phone, the online quoting system won't do it.

I think you may be "over interpreting" the guidelines?

There isn't a singular definition of the "NHS Waitlist".

Not to be flippant with the rules but I imagine the intent may lie in somewhere else vs. what must be a very regular referral to a specialist for a specific problem.

I would expect insurance companies to "over interpret" if it meant they could get out of coverage. OP has said the person in question has painful periods and is on a waiting list and has not had an initial consulation.

Also the OP is not over interpreting, the online system are refusing to quote after answering "currently on a waiting list for a consultation or investigation" in the affirmative.

Are you suggesting the person is not on a waiting list for a consultation or investigation, or that she is, but to lie on the insurance application form ?

My friend got insured with these whilst on waiting list for enlarged prostate for info.

They also provide waiting list cover as optional extra.

Myself I have gone with them because I have pre existing medical conditions.
