From what I understand, you are covered for your holidays from the minute you book if you already have a policy, but if you arrange travel insurance after booking - They won't cover you if flights/accommodation are cancelled before you travel

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong

So what happens if you are with one provider and want to switch providers but you already have holidays booked/paid for? Will the new company cover you in the event of cancellation before travel?

pretty sure this is not correct, you just aren't covered for the time between booking it and taking out the insurance.

Ok, that's not too bad then.

Now my fiancée now has her engagement ring, a good friend of mine lost theirs on holiday doing a kayaking trip, and they were covered so I just want to make sure we are as well.

Was just concerned as my current insurer only covers you £200 for jewellery and don't seem to have a better option than that.

Ok ... so coming from someone who deal with this on a daily basis as I am a travel agent.

Travel Insurance covers you from the moment you take it out.

So if you are going on a 7 night holiday and you take a 7 night policy at the time of purchasing your holiday, anything that then crops up preventing from travelling on your holiday and that is covered by the policy ( ie you fall ill but you were not ill before you took the policy out ) then you would be subject for any monies refunded back to you by the insurance company NOT the travel agent minus any excess you may have with them.

If however you do not take the policy out at the time of booking and then something happens then you wont be covered.

You can take the policy out at anytime after the booking has been done but you are only covered from the day you take it out. You will not be covered by any pre existing medical condition unless cleared with the medical screening team with the insurance company.
