Hi guys,

Trying to come up with a rough budget for travelling around Australia for a month, staying in Youth hostels. I've no idea how much food etc etc etc to budget for, or accomodation really, so would be grateful if anyone can suggest some dedicated forums full of people who've done this sort of thing plenty of times in the past?

Cheers!

Fo 'sho.

Trouble with google is that although it will give you 100 results you've no idea of the quality of a forum, I was hoping for some personal recommendations.

couchsurfing website is awesome

i went with 2 friends on a 10 day trip around Sweden, Finland & Estonia

Had free accommodation from people on there, and met up with others for drinks etc :)

Sounds pretty cool but as I'm going with the girlfriend I think the double rooms the Hostels offer might work out a bit better than crashing on somebodys couch :D

Thanks for the links guys, very useful indeed :)

fair enough :), it's worth signing up there though, it's called 'couch surfing' but many people have spare rooms etc

great friendly non-rapey community

has a googlemaps type map with locations of people, we used a few as nightlife guides, and just bought them a drink or two for meeting up with us

Ive just done 2 months in oz (and a few other places)

Hostels cost me between 15 dollars (cairnes) to about 34 dollars (byron bay)

Most are around 25. For food you can easily live on 5 oz dollars a day, but to to this you have to go shopping for the week and spend $35. Some hostels will provide a basic breakfast, then i was eating fruit and some crackers for lunch and dinner was rice/pasta, some meat and some veg.
If you are doing the east coast then your budget will be sucked up by activities/trips and alcohol mostly, like bars. There wasnt many clubs. If you stick to 'goon' (box wine) then get stanleys for 12.99 for 4 litres. Its actually not that bad.

If doing the east coast then i would say do whitsundays and fraiser island, they are the 2 main ones. For a month on budget i would say take $1800 to be safe (£820) thats to over cover food and excursions. Diving adds loads as does going on big nights out
