Travelling with cameras through UK airports... experiences?

Has anyone been through a UK airport recently with the new size restrictions on cabin baggage?

I purhcased a camera bag that is the perfect size for Virgin Atlantics regulations, but now the governmant have put some very tight size restrictions in place. The main problem is that the depth of the bag must be no larger than 16cm. Even my smallest bag is 17.5cm deep.

Do the security people actually measure the bags, or is it possible to get a bag which might be 1 or 2 cm larger through?

Going out of Luton to Poland was fine. Took everythng, Laptop, Wires, 350D, etc.

Coming back it was complete lockdown, plastic wags with essential items so £2000 of stuff had to go in the hold in a not a very well protected bag with a single pink sticker that came off by the other end!

Airport handling staff are complete ****s. I was looking out of the window and it was throw throw throw, and a big pink sitkcer came out in clear view and *throw*.

You are lucky they didn't steal it, I wouldn't trust anything in the hands of those people!

The short turnaround times don't allow the handlers to handle each bag with care. They have under 30 mins to load 200+ bags into a small space and it's hard work.
I can assure you, if you were to do that job, you would launch the bags!
