I am planning on travelling next month to visit some family abroad. I have a £60 projector lying around in my house which I don't use and I wanted to give this to my family abroad.

So my question is I was going to put it in my main luggage, but I'm worried the projector lamp and lens might get damaged and broken in transit.

Anyone have any advice on the best way to travel with this? Anyone ever travelled with a projector?

Cheers

Presumably the projector made it from the factory in China to the port, then 8,000 miles by sea to another port where it was moved to a truck before being offloaded at some warehouse. Then it was picked and shipped to the retailer who then sent it via courier to you? The lamp and lens survived all that.

It's a £60 projector so the lens won't be gas sealed or anything fancy. If it is a glass lamp (bulb) rather than an LED light source then it'll be a 12v quartz halogen of the same type that's used in house lights rather than a high-pressure arc lamp, and if that is the case then the reduction in air pressure at altitude for hold luggage will actually lessen the chances of the lamp imploding. The hold isn't heated, but then again have you ever had to thaw out your luggage after a flight?

You could always carry the projector in your hand luggage.

Actually the hold of most large commercial aircraft is heated / warmed, especially if an animal is in transit. The pressure is also the same in the hold as in the cabin.

I've not taken one on an aircraft and having seen the way some of the luggage is handled I wouldn't have much hopes but I've moved house, taken to events, lent to other people to take to events, etc. mine with them surviving so far.

I have taken computer parts and even a whole system to and from the US by plane without any problems so far though.

I'm actually amazed by my Optoma HD70 bought in 2006... which has been the one I've used the most and lent the most - still on the first bulb, still going strong - doubt it will much longer it has rolled the counter over on the bulb even and aside from taking longer to warm up to proper brightness and maybe a little reduced light output no issues - though I have run it in high altitude and eco mode most of its life.

I'd take the bulb out and hand carry that if its permitted
.. once they have been used/heat-cycled they become more fragile too knocks/jars.
