Hey,

My fiancé and I are planning to go travelling in the summer for a few months and would appreciate some advice. Basically we are heading over to Canada to live (Toronto way) and would like to travel Canada for a month or so whilst I wait my Permanent residence visa to come through.

Once my visa has arrived we'd like to go to the following places (suggestions welcome and in no particular order):

  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • Thailand
  • Dubai
  • Bahrain
  • Vancouver
  • LA
  • California
  • Rockies
  • Whistler
  • Singapore

What would be the best way of going about this? I was thinking of purchasing a world traveler ticket and planning stays in hostels on the way? Any recommendations of who to go with?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Jon

Depending on your standards, most hostels are quite clean and generally good. I never booked online, just ring them up and reserve a night when they are busy.
I went with STA travel, just go in, give them your places and when you want to go and they will tell you how much

STA claim to offer to beat any advertised flight deal which is worth a look. Does anyone know how useful this is? It's a lot of hassle to go through to find they'll offer a £999 ticket for £998..

If ur moving to canada aint there gona be plenty opertunitys to go there?
Maby im just being a bit dumb like after all vodka + Forums
= Nonsence

Edit: also when i was younger i went to germany and France, we always stayed in hostels, its great you meet like minded people and get to find out so much about where to go an see

I just got back from a year of traveling and done most of these places...

I would say from Toronto you could take some buses up the east side to the capital Ottawa, then onto Montreal & Quebec city, and if you wanted to you could go further to Nova Scotia but it's a fair trek. Getting to Vancouver/Rockies you could take bus (3days) same as train from Toronto, or drive it yourself, but the middle part doesn't have too much, it's all flat and the same looking but we found a lot of cool spots (I done a roadtrip from Montreal down the coast then across the middle and up to Jasper down to Vancouver going through the rockies, amazing is all I can say. Easiest bet would be flying into Calgary or Edminton and then renting a car and driving through the rockies all the way to Vancouver.

From Vancouver i took the bus to LA, being cheapest option, it wasn't too bad, seen some cool places along the way. LA was a dump though, I didn't enjoy it. Again perhaps flying may be the best option to LA or such, then renting a car and doing California, or take the bus from Vancouver to Seattle and drive from there.

From LA fly to NZ, into Christchurch or Auckland then leave from the one you don't fly into so you can see both North and South without backtracking. In NZ the best way to do it is getting a car or campervan and seeing the country, or a tour bus like Kiwi experience or Magic bus but they generally are full of loads young people just wanting to get ****ed up! But if thats what you want as well as seeing NZ and do lots of activities try it out :p.

Then onto Australia, go wherever you planned and you can do it the same bus, car/campervan easily.

Then onto Asia, flying into Singapore then you can make your way by train to Thailand, which is cheap and some great sights! Fairly easy to get around and cheap too.
As for Dubai/bahrain can't help.

Ticket wise speak to STA and all the other companies, but first use Oneworld and make an itineray and it will give you a quote use this as starting point of prices when checking STA and the other companies. http://oneworldrtw.innosked.com/ And yes stay in hostels, cheap, usually clean and lots of fun. You will meet lots of great people or you can keep to yourself, but hostels are definitely the best way. In Asia you can get cheap guesthouses and such.

Well i have done Aus and NZ, but that combination was easy because of close proximity,
and i was staying with family.

If i was to do it again, i would do NZ which is really a beautifull country, but can be wet cold and windy, followed by Aus, and spend more time in Aus because you need to.

not really, just go in, you will be there for about 2 hours. Get a price, if its too high say its too high, if not leave a small deposit and look around (or look around first)

Hey,

Thanks for all the info. I have to stay in Canada until my Permanent Residence Visa has arrived in which can take anything up to eight weeks. This is why I'd rather go over to the West Cost Canada for a few weeks. I have a camping trip planned in Algonquin Park too. I've already been to Montreal (proposed last year in Montreal) and can go to Ottawa anytime really.

The only problem I can foresee is that I will be in Canada and my money is in Canada which could be a pain in booking with STA, I'll give it a go though still and the exchange rate is in my favour for transferring money back.

I do like to plan trips quite a lot but I feel that part of the travelling experience is to just turn up in a city and do what you want how do you guys normally go about travelling? Do you plan it or wing it a bit?

Cheers,

Jon

I did both. Booked all my flights, bus travel in australia and newzealand, everything in fiji (most people do, as you just get a package and on all the islands everyone ends up booking packages) USA i booked packages but still had 5 nights free.
