Hi all,

Just wondering when you would normally consider changing your tyres.

Obviously the legal limit is 1.6mm but I'm guessing most people wouldn't really want to go that low.

My fronts are now between 2 and 3mm at various points across the tread, I'm not too sure how much longer these would last? (500miles? 1000 miles? more? less?), but with winter not far away I'm thinking of changing them.

The car is a fiesta currently fitted with Continental Premium Contact 185/55/R14 and I'm likley to replace with the same.

Thanks

I would start looking around to replace them in 500miles (I would want to replace them before the rain and ice of the winter).

One thing I must stress is that if you crash (even if not your fault) with tyres under 1.6mm then you could get ***** hard in court.

As you say, get them changed before the weather starts to get much worse. Its already starting to pour down, wind and chilly through the night!

I'd change them at 2-3mm. I got tired of my ESP light being permanently on in the wet ;)

I change mine when they get to 3mm - wet performance falls of a cliff below 3mm.

Mine went when they reached the tread depth thingy, so I'm guessing 3mm?

FWIW - this is not recommended on winter tyres, as I found out after sliding backwards into a snowbank. Change these at 5mm.

is a good time to change :p

I'm down to 3-4mm on my fronts and 6mm on the back, so the fronts going on the back this weekend so i can replace the entire set in the spring.

I don't expect the backs to wear hardly atall over the winter so i'll change when they all get down to 3mm as like has been previously said wet performance is pretty dire below 3mm

But if you only change 2 at a time you don't have to fork out such a big bill in one go.

Also due to differing wear patterns you actually accelerate the wear rate by rotating tyres, so it's false economy

Unless you are skint thats not really an issue - it sounds like he can quite easily afford to buy 4 tyres for his car.

I much prefer buying 4 tyres to 2 - it gives you complete choice over which tyre to go for, whereas when buying 2 you pretty much end up sticking with what you've got.

I was therefore pretty pleased when the wear rates of my front and rear tyres coincided this time round.

Yeah as i want to change tyre brand next time so i don't want mismatched tyres front and back.

Plus my rear tyres are from 2007 so i want to get them worn down so i can change them asap
