Treadmill versus street

i use to run on a tread mill great in the winter but i prefer street running all the elemnets rain sun and sleet and so for makes you more fitter imo as you need to really want to train and get fit
treadmills you can get very bored
great for walking the dog on lol

Ye, aren't treadmills slightly cushioned under foot? certainly softer on the joints than street running. And, not being an experienced runner I don't think I'd be able to maintain a reasonable pace off a treadmill.

Although, tis pretty tedious on a treadmill even with music. I struggle not to clock-watch sometimes.

Never tried a treadmill but I remember one of the members here mentioning a girl who did all her marathon training on a treadmill and when it came to the streets she couldn't manage the extra strain at all.

Strangely enough I did a treadmill yesterday for an hour because I wanted to avoid impact. Still not sure whether it was harder or whatever... i didn't use proper shoes because it was impromptu session when I was down the gym but I found that I wasn't keeping my usualy pace. I run at a fair pace and I think it is harder to get a proper running posture on a treadmill...

Treadmill is easier, with the lack of air resistance, softness under foot, and lack of variation in the surface. But there is the boredom factor.
I put the treadmill on an incline to replicate air resistance, but still do half of my running outdoors, as the hills and uneven nature of the paths and roads gives my ankles and legs more of a workout, plus the scenery is more interesting. Much prefer running through woodland than watching MTV base. Only advantage for the treadmill is knowing my pace, but one day I'll buy a Garmin Foerunner or similar device.

Got to say I hate treadmills and always feel slightly robbed by using one, it's like paying for something I could have done for free on the way to the gym! I enjoy the mental challenge of going for an outdoor run in the freezing cold rain of a normal british winter.
