Tree Removal & Stumping Costs

Just wondering if we have any resident tree surgeons or general landscapers that deal with tree removal and stumping.

I am looking to get 6-7x 15-20ft Leylandii removed, and want to get a scope of what would be a reasonable price.

I have previously taken down other trees and would be willing to give this a go myself, but need to compare the cost of getting someone else in to do it vs the cost of doing it myself.

I saw a tree dude working in my neighbours. I took the oppurtunity to as him to chop down a large holly tree and a conifer. He removed them both for £75 but left stumps at ground level.

I'm a gardener and I get asked similar questions daily. You need to see the job to price it really. Some will go in at a high price to cover there back, but I don't like to do that.

Phone a few gardeners/tree surgeons up and ask for a quote. Just make sure they don't charge for quotes.

Price should be cheaper if you handle getting rid of the waste afterwards. A professional will have to pay to take it to the local tip, as a resident you usually don't and you are saving them some time as well.

The problem is that i often get quoted based on where i live and not on ease of job, an example would be my recent elecrical work i got done. Quotes ranged from £850-£1150. Finally got in a chap in who was recommended through a family member, honest chap and more qualified then most of the other quoters and did the job for £650, no mates rates or favours.

The trees are 5ft wide, sitting at the edge of our drive way next to the boundry fence. Access wise there is pretty easy access with plenty of space to work as the drive way can fit 2 cars side by side and 3 cars nose to tail so plenty of room for the felling etc.

Needless to say i will be getting quotes in, i was just trying to get a ball park figure in the first instance as it could sway my mind on doing it myself or not.

5ft wide? Thats some big trees so expect an equally big price! Id imagine for something that big they will need to climb up and cut bits down and winch them down but will depend on the area.

I recently had 3 conifers removed and a further 8 stumps ground out (that Id already cut down) and it cost me £400.

The trees in full spread are 5ft wide, not the trunks, the largest trunk is probably 1-1.5ft thick! 15-20ft tall leylandii are far from big!

You'd be surprised how fast you can hack conifers down, hard part is getting the stumps out.

We got rid of a 15ft+ conifer a couple of months ago, took half an hour to hack the main branches off and get it down to stump height.

Wife for scale. :D

Though I suppose it might be harder if it's just a single solid trunk all the way up!

Doing it myself isnt a concern as far as doing the work, its the stump removal, which i have previously done for 8 other 10ft conifers i removed a few years ago, and the disposal of the trees after that i dont want to deal with if i can avoid it.

Last year we topped all our trees by removing at least 8ft off the top of every one we have in the garden and the disposal took 14 tip runs using a ford connect transit van, and although this would only be 7-8 trees i suspect the combined waste would be around the same amount!

We just let it dry out for a week then burnt the crap out of it in a big bonfire :p

A ford connect is a very small van for trees. You can hire a van for the day quite cheap.

Also you could hire a chipper but younee to let them dry out for a few days atleast.

I had a large conifer removed last year, trunk was probably just over 2ft wide. We also had a Fig tree and Holly removed and the stumps ground down on all 3 plus a large stump from a previous job. We also had a Silver Birch reduced by 1/3 and a Prunus tree thinned out.
Price was £300. It all went through their chipper there and then and they were gone in a few hours.

A friend of mine had a huge pile of waste from a tree he'd removed, I spent a very enjoyable day incinerating it all while he stripped down the brakes on my car, fixed a dodgy slider and rebuilt, a good exchange I felt, especially as the incinerating was great fun!! lol

Can't been a good bit of burninating. :D

Update!

I got the trees removed and stumping done.

In all it was 9 trees out the front and one out the back. The 9 out the front all stood around 20ft tall with trunks roughly 1ft in diameter. The one out the back was 25ft with again a trunk at least 1ft in diameter.

The trees were felled and chopped, and the stumps ground down so nothing left, all in £700.

£700 is nothing, a bargain really, I had a quote just recently on a single large tree stump of £500 for removal. Immediately starting to think to do what those YT guys did build a moat around the stump, petrol and non stop fire and just burn the problem away.

Only issue is its in an awkward place and not private.

I was told from another guy best to get the drive way done and if its irish guys or company they can break the stumps away with the big jcbs even or charge £50 or 100 extra to do it, if you go to get it done separate they will charge £400-500+ ie ripp off prices.

Mind you in central london these are probably normal prices !
