Is it just me or anyone else not like the trend games are taking? I'm referring to the clunkiness and "smallness" of games nowdays.

Bought on most strongly by playing the new battlefield and going back to BF2 for a quick blast.

I wish it could remain "clear", improve texture quality maybe, but stop all this blurry stuff etc.

Not making myself clear but meh.

Its consoles they are killing gaming. They limit what the developers can do. BF2 had 64 player maps in 2005 now we are back to 32 max 5 years later..

These days its not "What can we do to make this game mind-blowing and innovating?" its more "How can we sugar coat this turd to make it look good in trailers to maximise profits?"

I just wish that they'd make BF2 with the frostbite 2 engine. Karkand with more accessable buildings, + unlimited destruction = pure win.

- Consoles
- Piracy
- "Decline" of PC sales
- PC gaming snobbery
- Evil publishers

I dunno, pick a reason from the above..Not saying I agree with any of them, but they seem to be the reasons people think of nowadays..

There are plenty of releases from the past couple years that are "clear", not "clunky" or indeed "small".. You can't expect every game which milks a franchise to its bitter end for the sake of moneymaking to live up to these expectations though..

Crysis 2 will be out sometime in the future, that should at least be the exception to the rule :)

Plus if it's BF2 you like then play BF2 and enjoy ;)

This.

64 players was standard on Tribes 2 servers which was released in what 2001?

I wasnt talking about map sizes per se (though that is something I miss) more the graphical direction of games.

I've been playing some older games and love the "clean" look to them. Sure the textures are old, but its nice just playing the damn game without so much bloated stuff.

Some examples other than BF2? Would be nice to get a better sense of where you're coming from with "older games" :)

I know exactly what you mean, it started in the current gen of console games, moved to pc games. That hazy/blurred look to far objects, bloom to cover detail.

I just never brought the topic up as most people don't notice it, but I can't help but wonder how you cannot notice it. I guess they are the kind that full under not noticing difference in higher resolution videos.

i think supcom 2 could be a good example of how some games have become worse. Forged Alliance's smaller uglier goofy sister....i know some may go for that but hey if thats your cup of tea :p

BFBC2 has restored my faith in pc gaming. Apart from the browser and DC issues atm it really is amazing. And everyone remember bf2 was rife with these problems on release.

It's a shame when I see what was PC specific franchises get dumbed down for the consoles. SupCom, Battlefield and Elder Scrolls series being good examples out of many. At least with Oblivion we got an editor to fix a lot of the consolitis.

Makes you think about PC gaming when since its launch more people are playing BFBC2 on the PC than the xbox and PS3 put together.

make it and they will come :D

I definitely think that games are getting smaller, I think they have been for several years now.

Smaller maps/levels, shorter gameplay, whole games whose length is around 6-8 hours of gameplay. Buy it on a Friday, finish it on the Sunday kind of thing. Its why my main genre is MMOs, although to be honest..even in the MMO genre the games are getting smaller

Isn't this all just rose-tinted goggles? I mean you only tend to remember the games that make you go "Wow, this is awesome!" so as time goes on you think that old games were much better then they actually were. It doesn't help that as a child my standards for games were a lot lower then they are now.

Also the standards for graphics, sound, and user interface are a lot higher then they used to be. What can be a decent game can get crucified in reviews / by customers for failings in either of these areas.

For me it's not a case of that. Many games used to have me putting ridiculous amounts of overall hours into them whether online or offline ones, replaying with different classes etc. Now, a game that can make me finish the single player never mind play online more than a week or reroll as a different archetype are few and far between.

Perhaps some of it comes down to outgrowing gaming over many years but i certainly think that the decreasing quality and length is part of it.
