Trends in gaming graphics memory usage

After a several years of not really needing to upgrade, it looks like that sort of time again. My old card is a GTX570; I haven't even decided on AMD/nVidia question yet, let alone which model.

My worry is about the fairly recent trends in increased graphics memory usage (a la Watchdogs). I'm assuming this is partly a consequence of the latest generation of console releases. What do people think is a reasonable amount to graphics memory to get to future proof me for the next 2 or 3 years? 3GB? 4GB?

I'm not planning to go the 4K route, but I'd like to play 1920x1200 as shinily as possible.

If it's 4GB then it looks like a 4GB 290, 4GB 770, or 6GB 780 is the only option. Unless I'm missing something.

TIA for your thoughts.

As you've had your 570 so long would it hurt to wait a bit longer for Maxwell which should come later this year?
But I want new toys nowwwww.

You're right. I should wait until official Maxwell specs are released, and probably until I've seen some benchmarks. Even if I don't get an 880, prices on 780s should come down I guess.
