Just a quick question, might be silly :P, Can Tri Channel RAM still be used in motherboards with dual channel compatibility? So lets say a ddr3 mobo had 4 slots and I buy a tri channel kit and fill three, will this work okay?

No the ram will run fine , dual channel perfect, the only distinguishing difference between triple and double channel kits are that the 3 modules come from the same batch. Doesnt make a fanny adams otherwise,

For example, i bought a geil black dragon triple kit because it was 15 pounds over the exact same double kit for my pc, and the double kit was out of stock, and i wanted it asap, works a treat , no hassle

Is this correct?. On a lot of dual channel motherboards there are usualy two coloured dimm sockets and two black dimm sockets. The manual often recommends using the two coloured dimm sockets for dual channel. So it's possible to put tri-channel ram into a dual channel mobo using two coloured dimms and one black dimm socket and have dual channel operation?.

No - you will be able to use all the ram if your system is running a 64 Bit OS but you will not have the speed benefits of running a truly dual channel system. Dual channel will only work when as the name says dual (or both) channels are populated with ram. So if you have three channels populated then you will not be having dual channel.

A tri-channel kit will work in any board that uses the same kind of memory. Two sticks in dual channel (4GB) will out perform the three sticks (6GB).
