Hi, i donno if this as been a topic,

which is the better cpu amd phemon 8450 or the quad 9550?

just cant make my mind up :)

Almost every desktop application the average joe will install and use on their system will be single-threaded, i.e. more than one core will be pointless.

Two cores are nice because they let the computer - effectively - do two things at once in a well-configured system. Above that, there are very few games that notice more than two cores at the moment (to the point at which it makes a difference), but if you're a hard-core encoder/photoshopper the more cores the better.

As you're not spending a lot on the processor, I'm going to make the assumption (apologies if this is incorrect as it probably will be) you're not a professional, and will therefore not derive much benefit from anything over two cores.

Spend more money on the graphics card, buy separate hard disks to mount on different channels for different purposes (OS, apps, data) and enjoy a better user experience through a nicely balanced system.

im using a 4800+ at the moment, i play cod4 which from what i have heard uses muliti-cpus
and photoshop cs3, i guess the 9550 is 20+ pounds more.
anyway nice quick responses, thanks :)

The 9550 is vastly better. I dont know why AMD's tri-core is so close in price as it does not compare. No one 'in the know' will buy them with prices that high.
