Please excuse my ignorance :)

A mates got a prebuilt machine with 3 ultras ( a waste i know...tried to tell him ) in it and 4 gigs of ram. Noticed that they only installed vista 32bit in it so whats the max ram his machine can use out of the 4gigs? Still 3.2GB?..... or less?

3 x 768 = 2304

so

4096 - 2304

= 1792MB FREE

- anything else that uses mem like the CPU cache etc.

Needless to say he needs Vista X64 on there ASAP.

It does, anything that has installed memory takes away from the total 4GB allocatable. Expect in the region of 1.5GB of RAM being usable.

Get hold of the X64 media and install it.

In SLI all the cards have the same data loaded to memory so it may only lose 768MB rather than 3x768MB.

Not sure if this is the case in reality however.

Yes the site advertises it as having 2.3gig of video memory which i know is not the case....just them trying to sell a very overpriced product.

Cant understand why they didnt load vista 64...its not like they didnt charge him enough.

Advised him to get the ocuk system but he insisted on going ahead. To make things worse its running hotter than a frying pan!!! 90-100c on both the gpu and cpu cores....but thats for another thread once i get back at it again and get more screenies.....if it doesnt catch fire and/or die before then :)

Yep :) One of the ultras hits 110c while the QX6850 cores are at 96c under load and near 80c idle....water cooling too.

I know i know....something seriously wrong with it.

Buy one of the ultras off him, that gives him more useable ram, hardly any performance difference (gfxwise) and u a great gfx card at mates rates ;)

Ultras arent water cooled i think just the cpu. Will def be investigating though as he paid a silly amount for it (against my advice) and it should at least run properly.

96C under water cooling?!
Tell him to investigate and send it back if he's sure it's setup right.

thats insane, set it up from the begining. nothing should go over 70 ever, on air.. i dont know about water but i would say above 50 is just plain crazy, unless you use a heater in the loop to get the water nice and warm

Did he wash out the radiator before using it?

No it was a pre-built top of the range thing from alienware and came pre-overclocked from 3g to 3.3 but still temps are mental...couldnt believe it when i saw them myself...

and thats after being at idle for 10 mins

wow that's hot.
If you are running triple SLI shouldn't they all be running at x16? Thought that would slow things down having the middle card running at only x8?

LOL, just looked it up. Based on a 680 board. Send it back get his money back.
If he is desperate for all those flashing lights tell him to go to Argos and get one of those Fiber Optic Flying Saucers and stick that on top, or better still get the 2k he will save and go and get it for him, quids in.
