Right, this is a real long shot, but I'm away on holiday for another week, and thus don't have access to a pc with an admin account (the one I've got access to has a guest account I can get into...but I can't use it to create a usb boot drive as it won't allow hardware install).

My family have brought a little XP equipped netbook, unfortunately in true Murphy's Law fashion, it's now decided to play up and upon attempting to boot is reporting that the pci.sys is missing or damage.

Ergo I need to try and replace this file.

I've already managed to get hold of a replacement copy of the file off the net, unfortunately with the netbook down I can't make a USB boot disc, and the trick is now getting it onto the netbook, all I have left is my HTC Desire.

I can unzip and the likes, is there ANY way that someone could think of, that I could make the SD Card into an NTFS accessing bootable drive, so I can transfer across the working pci.sys file (the netbook is on XP Pro) - I did consider MiniXP but the issue becomes getting one that works and then working out how to install it on the SD Card.

Unfortunately this would happen while I'm on holiday and dont have access to any of my kit/external drives, but I've got the family nagging me to see if I can do anything about it and I'd rather not hear another week of it!

Any help appreciated!

Brought it from where?

And can't your parents just wait? You're on holiday to enjoy yourself, not be technical support.

As in brought it with them. Sods law is it was working fine the other day, family want it because they wanted to use it for emails, checking photos and the like.

I figure it might be out of action til we get back next Saturday but if there's a way...

It's possible that the pci.sys is actually damaged - but much more likely is a hardware issue causing the problem. Problems with that file can be memory-related issues, but on a netbook the memory is probably not fixable without dismantling and invalidating warranty. This is particularly likely considering you have had pervious issues. My suggestion would be return the machine for a warranty repair.

To be fair, this machine hasn't had many issues before, its just sods law its decided to play up on holiday. The machine is well out of warranty, given the machine it's more likely its crashed and a file has corrupted, especially as it came with the copy of windows installed rather than me doing it, and I've had to clear bumph out before.
