Tricky One? (Spec me)

Older Passat estate? They came with the 90/110/130 hp 1.9TDI engines, which I believe I pretty solid (and efficient) units. They're reasonably roomy too.

Some examples:
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...ssat/onesearchad/used,nearlynew,new?logcode=p - low mileage for age, well inside budget

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...ake/volkswagen/page/2/price-to/1000?logcode=p - slightly newer

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...ake/volkswagen/page/2/price-to/1000?logcode=p - moon miles, but you get the 2.8 V6, full leather etc (not sure on reliability of these engines though, maybe someone else knows more)

There are a load of examples in your budget if you do a quick search on Autotrader.

Forget that e36 IMO, 199k miles, mot expired as is it's tax.

I'd look around the classified ads, but it'll be very hit & miss at this price bracket.

Hi try looking at the Avensis estate too, the petrols are again pretty bomb proof.

The 1.8 isn't actually, its got the same issue as the other models of that era with regards oil consumption. They will still run for a good while with the issue but its not really what you want from a cheap banger

Volvo V70 97-01 I think.

"Bomb proof" is a phrase that gets banded around a lot these days but if you want to see a genuine bomb proof car the V70 is one of them. My dad owned one for a decade and not a single thing went wrong with it in that time. Literally just needed servicing once a year. Always passed MOT first time and the oil was still very golden colour when it came out. It sounded brilliant too. The interior barely got worn down at all and he eventually sold it on around about 130k miles
