I have tried H.A.W.X but what i really want is a better flight type simulator combat jet aircraft game.

Can anyone recommend any good ones? I quite like the idea of one with Aircraft carriers to land on etc! Thanks

Lock on is a nightmare - it's painfully unnaccessable and a nightmare to learn how to use. The unfortunate fact is that there is no real decent modern fun flight simulators out there and with the end of development from Microsoft on FSX I don't believe there will be a decent combat flightsim in a long while... I could be wrong tho...

Whatever has the end of development of a non-combat sim got to do with combat flight sims?

Incoming sims (combat) that are in some stage of development that I know of are:

Fighter Ops (modern)
Rise of Flight (WWI and in closed beta)
SoW:BoB (WWII)
Korea Sim (Based on the SoW engine)
A10 addon/upgrade for BlackShark
Jet Thunder (Falklands Harrier Sim)
Something from 777 Studios (no idea)

How many of them will make it to release is another matter.

Because the MS combat flight sims were built around the MS Flight Sim engines. Apart from the IL2 mods and some 'in development' games there isn't anything out there that is overly engaging. Without a release date the games and addons you've mentioned aren't worth the code they're written in - excuse the cynic in me but I have seen many a game that I've been interested in fall by the wayside.

LMAO, when was the last MS combat sim? and even then it was far from decent, if you were going to use that proviso you should have said so.

Agreed, which is why I stated so in my post.

Falcon 4.0.

Looks as dated as it is -- but is the best available for what you're after. Make sure you thoroughly patch it even if without patches it appears OK ..

edit. Try moving back to WW2. When you do, you realise 'sidewinder missiles being launched from 30 miles away at a single pixel' is actually very boring compared to machine-gun dogfights.

A nightmare? Lock On? You must be playing a different Sim mate, Lock on can be set to be as easy or difficult as you like, there are dozens of options for realism/arcade modes. There are tons of Sims on the way too as Dano pointed out.

To the OP download the Lock on demo and make up your own mind - Near the bottom of the page... http://lockon.co.uk/index.php?end_pos=135&scr=products&lang=en ) A very good user made vid from lock on - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCJKS_9TQfM

Other Sims to check out are IL2 1946 for WW2 air combat, Falcon 4 too is excellent, but it's a bit on the heavy side in terms of complexity. There is also DCS:- Black shark for Helicopter combat. For Vietnam era combat Strike Fighters 2 would be worth a look. Edit:- I forgot for WW1 flying Rise of Flight is on its way too.

A good site to start with is www.simhq.com lots of info there.

What's this? I'm assuming BoB is Battle of Britain, love sims based around this.

Indeed, Storm of War:Battle of Britain by Oleg Maddox of IL2 fame.

He's building the engine as a launch point for a new series of sims, has even hinted at online MMO style stuff being possible too.

Deadly video! Lock On looks good. Arcade mode could be what I'm looking for, I don't want a realistic flight sim (could never get the hang of landing) just flying around blowing things up, basically.

Like Top Gun.

NO advanced flight sim is easy to learn..LOMAC is probably the best...it takes time to learn but is very rewarding in the long run;)

Realistic is where the fun is though, and learning to land is easy in this age of voice comms and multiplayer servers.
