Ok so me & a mate are really up for traveling around the world sometime next year around Jan/Feb. We've always wanted to do it but both have been busy with work. Now an opportunity for both of us to quit work around x-mas has appeared but we're both alittle clueless.

Budget will be around £2000 each with destinations like Oz/New Zealand in mind although im well up for some jungle destinations. Really just looking for some starting points or tips as most websites ive found are £1800 'tour' holidays for 18 days max. We had at least 6 weeks in mind & wanted to avoid those kind of package holidays.

So if anyone's had an awsome time roughing it on another continent, please tell where/when/cost, promise il bring a stick of rock back :D

Depends how rough you want to go. If you take a rusk sack, sleeping bag, and just get a cheap flight it won't cost you much at all. If you're OK with getting some rough guide books and choosing where you want to go and just going then you might get more out of it.

I don't mean to put a downer on things, but I don't think you'll get a RTW trip for 6 weeks for £2000. Flights and travel will be at least half that, and then you still have to cover accomodation, food, activities, sightseeing etc.

For that sort of budget you could probably do a nice tour of Europe, perhaps by Interrail or something, although I'm sure someone with personal experience will be in the thread shortly :)

Me and a mate hitch hiked up the coast of queensland for 3 months, camping. was around £1.5k all in (each)

Edit: to echo the above, I've also interailled round Europe for 6 weeks for a total of about £1.2k

My friend has recently bought a round the World trip for herself from STA travel. You pick the flights, and then you're free to do as you please. It was pretty cheap, though she's going for months and months.
Worth checking out the company though. They also offer tours and stuff that they tried quite actively to sell her, but they are quite expensive and can easily be got cheaper so watch out for them.
I agree with apeZ though, 6 weeks isn't really long enough. I'd do Europe again. Spent 2k in 6 weeks.

Doesnt seem like an awful lot of money for this really - budget carefully.

I only did Australia and 6 weeks probably cost me £3000-£3500.

I did this in Africa and then stayed on for a few weeks after. It was incredible and the best 8 weeks in my life. Could probably do it on 2 grand but think i spent a bit more. Flights were like £700 alone.

Its called overlanding. Basically a group of us (there were 25 in total) live from a big truck, which once stopped turns into a mini base with tents and a little kitchin and stuff. I met some of the greatest people on my trip and had the time of my life so far, i cant recommend it enough.

So it's not really round the world so much as a typical UK -> Thailand -> NZ -> Oz -> UK which everyone does.

Was going to say round the world cost me and the wife £20k.

I'm confused, do you mean traveling around the world with stops, or simply flying to and traveling around Oz/NZ?. The latter may be possible if you're willing to rough it and watch the pennies, but there's no way you'll get very far on £2k in terms of world travel. Cheapest flights I could find to OZ recently were circa £1k return, which wouldn't leave much for 6 weeks of travel within Oz.
