Hi, I currently have a Patriot Viper 6GB 1600MHz DDR3 triple channel memory kit installed on my ageing Asus P6T mobo. I have been trying to find the same kit to upgrade to 12gb but it isnt to be had anywhere.

I am noticing that triple channel kits no longer seem to be available on Overclockers. My question is that if I buy 3 dual channel or 6 single channel kits, will they work on a triple channel board?

Thanks.

It will, as the memory controller determines how the the ram operates. Only difference is that they are matched pairs of ram.

I think the last "triple channel" kit (6 sticks) I bought was just 3 pairs with similar serial numbers, shouldn't be an issue if they're all the same brand/speeds.

If you have issues sourcing a triple channel kit of your liking, another option would be to go for 4 sticks of RAM - I'm pretty sure the P6T will run in 'flex' mode. Essentially this is triple channel mode for the first three sticks with the 4th stick running in single channel mode.

It's just a thought - nowadays a lot of the triple channel kits you see on sale are at silly prices and it can sometimes be a less expensive route to more RAM if you go for a 4 channel kit. ;)

Thanks for the advice here. However, I still haven't purchased my upgrade. I'm confused as to which modules currently available with Overclockers are compatible!

From what I understand, my mobo supports 1333mhz base speed but will push to 1600mhz using xmp. Do I have to buy ram that has a 1333mhz base speed or will ram with 1600mhz base speed work?

Also, if i run in quad channel and enable xmp will 3 sticks run at 1600mhz and 1 stick at 1333mhz?

I was in a similar situation as yourself. I had 3x2GB Corsair Dominators (CMT6GX3M3A2000C8) in a triple channel configuration on my ASUS Rampage 3 Extreme. To upgrade to 12GB I purchased this dual-channel kit: 2x4GB Corsair Vengeance LP (CML8GX3M2A1600C9).

My RAM configuration is as follows:

Slot A1: 4GB Corsair Vengeance LP
Slot A2: Empty
Slot B1: 4GB Corsair Vengeance LP
Slot B2: Empty
Slot C1: 2GB Corsair Dominator
Slot C2: 2GB Corsair Dominator

(one 2GB Corsair Dominator stick is unused)

So channels A, B and C each have 4GB in a triple-channel configuration:

You can buy faster RAM - it will run at 1333mhz or 1600mhz still :)
