I have had a dual monitor setup for a while now and all has been good. At the moment I only use one of the monitors for gaming but I do use both in general windows use. The monitors that I use have been discontinued, I think for a while, and I have managed to pick up a third monitor cheaply.

I am looking to get the third monitor up and running and am a little unsure on how to proceed. My system is quite old now so it will probably not be able to run the latest games on all three monitors, but I would like the option to be able to do that on some older games.

My current spec is:

  • Asus P5NE-SLI
  • Q6600 @ 2.4ghz
  • 8GB Ram
  • 550W PSU
  • GTX 560 ti

What would be the best way to go about upgrading so that I can use three monitors.

As far as I can tell I have two options.

  • Buy a second 560ti and possibly a new power supply and run these in SLI. Not sure if this is possible on the P5NE-SLI?
  • Buy a highish end ATI card.

Any ideas on what would be the best option, or if there is another option. I am not looking to upgrade the whole lot just now.

Yes, those are basically the two options. Your motherboard supports 8x/8x SLI so that is fine. The PSU would be the only other thing you'd need to change. Do you have some sort of budget? What PSU is your current one (make/model)? It's likely that adding a GTX560Ti will add the most performance, though it may be bottlenecked by your CPU. Have you considered overclocking?

I have tried overclocking various CPUs on this motherboard and can’t seem to get anything stable really. I may look at having another go as it would be nice to get a little more out of it. In fact, a better quality PSU may even help with this.

How easy is it to get SLI cards to run a game over multiple monitors?
