Hi all,

So I just bought the following:

  • Sony A6300 camera
  • 16-50mm kit lens
  • 10-18 wide angle lens for silky smooth, creamy bokeh
  • 55-210mm telephoto lens

It's main use will be for videography opposed to photography, so 4k was a big selling point for me.

Main use will be vlogs and product videography and would love some suggestions as to what to get.

I'm after the following:

  1. Tripod that can pan and tilt and also go up and down.
  2. Dolly slider rail so that I can move across a product. Motorized or not?
  3. Desk tripod or some way of putting the camera on the desk for vloggy type videos.

Been thinking Manfrotto as a lot of people have recommended to me as quality but no idea what I should be looking for.

Thanks in advance,

Andy

As with everything photography, budget and application purpose are the two main things needing answered to recommend a product.

I currently use this manfrotto tripod https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00ICFIRZU with this manfrotto head https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00ICFIV7E/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 . That head is a photography focused head, if you are after a video head, then look at https://www.amazon.co.uk/Manfrotto-...78835564&sr=1-1&keywords=manfrotto+head+video .

Obviously this is an expensive setup, but you get what you pay for they are high quality in materials and production. There are plenty cheaper setups out there and if you are spending the vast majority of your time in a fixed location doing product video/photography id strongly suggest going for a cheaper tripod whilst putting a reasonable amount into the tilt and pan head (as thats what is going to make the shot look smooth, not the tripod legs).

As for desk setup, maybe check out the classic vlogger on the go's choice, the Joby https://www.amazon.co.uk/Joby-Goril...s&ie=UTF8&qid=1478835843&sr=1-1&keywords=joby tripod, its great for on the go vlogs but could just as easily be used at home on your desk, they are surprisingly stable, especially with your sony setup since its a lot lighter and smaller than what I use on my Joby (D800+ heavy 2.8 lenses).

Sliders are something I am not knowledgable on, but I would say if you are going to splash out on one, you might as well get a motorized one, though I would get the hang of the basics first and get really good at editing before dropping money on every accessory available.

90% of product photo/videography is the lighting and background, invest time into youtube videos to learn about it.

the best video head you can get before jumping upto £1k+ is a manfrotto

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Manfrotto-...816&sr=1-1&keywords=manfrotto+video+head+bowl

big chunky handle can be left / right side , well made and has good adjustable fluid drag on pan and tilt ( needs adjusting a bit when the weather is cold as the "fluid" gets thicker ) then get a good tripod that has flat plate base and bowl option with a levelling base so you can get your panning spot on, biggest killer for me when videoing is wind and vibration.

recommend a benro / gitzo carbon very stiff but pricey just make sure it has a flat removeable base to allow a bowl fitting.

I bought a MVH502, the one that mounts to a photographic tripod, last week for a video shoot I had coming up at work. It's a real pleasure to use. I use it on a set of 055 legs, which it somewhat dwarfs.
