Hey guys, i've just bought a Manfrotto 055 ProB Tripod off the MM and need a bit of help with what head to get for it. All i've had so far is a £20 Hama "tripod" which is more than a bit pants.

Am i right in assuming a Manfrotto tripod has to have a Manfrotto head?

I've been looking at the Manfrotto 460MG Magnesium Head which can be had for around £50, has anyone any advice or other suggestions around the £50 mark?

Thanks

No, Manfrotto tripods have a standard thread albeit the larger 3/8" so any head that has that thread will fit. However some Manfrotto heads have a serrated base that take the locking screws around the mounting plate on the tripod and this locks the two together very firmly.

You have email re 460MG.

I bought one of the quick release ball heads that Manfrotto and Bogen do. Think it is the 222.
More than £50 new, but I bought mine used from that auction site - along with the tripod. Real bargains if you are prepared to wait.
The ball head is very adjustable which was what I was after as I used it for macro shots.

It depends what you want it for. Mine is not ideal for heavy or long lenses.

Have a look Red snapper - excellent products and very reasonably priced! I got an really good ball head from there.

You can mix and match provided you keep the 3/8" thread in mind, there are some good Giotto heads and I used a Slik "pistol grip" style head on a friends Velbon the other day and it is going to be on my shopping list, brilliant for speed and the build quality was as good as anything else.

^ +1

Also just purchased the Redsnapper TB-12 ball head to go with the CF tripod and it is a solid piece of kit. Well worth a look and the delivery service is outstanding - next day.
