I have been looking for a tripod for a friend and found the Velbon DX 888 tripod with QR plate which he likes (and will probably buy).

Now to my question... in a round about way

I currently have a Manfrotto MN714B tripod coupled with a Manfrotto 484RC2 quick release ball head.

The one thing I wish I had bought initially was a head with a panning handle for when I shoot motorsports as my current head is no good for that. Would the DX 888 fit my needs instead of the more expensive manfrotto set up?

My camera is the 350D with grip and either the EF-S 17-85 IS USM or the Sigma 30-300 APO will be attached while it is on the tripod.

If the Velbon will do what I need, then what kind of price should I expect if I sell my current manfrotto kit?

Any and all help is appreciated

I don't think I've ever seen anyone shooting motorsports with a tripod, monopods yes but not tripods. Personally I think I would find a tripod restrictive in what it would allow you to do movement wise.

What I was going to suggest was that if you wanted to try a pan head that rather than changing the whole setup you could just get a second head but looking at the manfrotto site I don't think the head on the 714 can be changed.
