Whilst looking for something else in the loft i came accross my old mans tripod...
It's 20 odd years old, made of steel and alu, weighs around the same as my Manfrotto 055MF4 and is as sturdy.
My MF4
My Dads old Tripod
Compared compacted, same height (nothing in it)
Compared with legs extended (MF4 Slightly taller)
And finally the collar
Just goes to show that you don't have to get a brand spanking new tripod to get quality looking about for an old Gitzo should get you a really good tripod for less than a new one and be of equal quality (or better than the cheapie ones these days). In fact if I knew he had it I probably wouldn't have bothered with the MF4
EDIT: Yes my house is messy I had a radiator leak at the weekend and had to move everything out of the storage room to dry the wall (I found the tripod whilst looking for a pipe bending tool in the loft)
