Tripod thread size

i take it all tripod screws are the same size, the part that screws into the bottom of your camera, camcorder etc.

so, what is the size?

a friend is making a home made steadi-cam rig and wants to affix his DV-corder to the top, via a bolt, but we need the size.

Most cameras have a 1/4-20 (1/4" diameter, 20 threads per inch) socket for attachment to a tripod

does that size have a code, like when i get bolts for mounting our projector, the size was called "m14"

my monopod has a dual thread for both sizes.

I think some much older cameras have a bigger thread and thats what its for. If its not used then it springs down to expose the smaller one.

I think you will find that the two possible sizes are 1/4 x 20 BSW (British Standard Whitworth) and 3/8 x 16 BSW on some older cameras.
