Trouble Dual Booting XP

I have Windows 7 running on my X58/i7 system, but need to run XP too.
I've created a partition, but every time I try to install I get a BSOD of sorts.

I'm running RAID 0 which may be the problem.
Do I need to install RAID drivers at the beginning of XP setup?
If so... HOW?!

It's my understanding you really need to install Win Xp first, then install Win 7 on another partition/drive to get it to work properly due to the boot records. Also if you have a RAID setup then yes this is likely a requirement to add the drivers during the install

Well I've been doing a little research, and I'm gonna try this 'nLite' program to load the RAID drivers onto an XP iso.

Can you explain why I'd need to have XP installed first?
I've been tempted to do a reformat but its a slightly daunting task to be honest.

I agree, tbh I have not done this in practice but it came up during my Vista MCTS exam prep, basically if you have XP installed it uses XP boot loader, but if you then install Vista, it uses Vista boot loader instead.

If XP is installed when you install Vista it recognises both the installs and this is reflected in the Vista boot loader which gives you a choice of which O/S you want to boot into

If you install Vista first then try to install XP, it will still use the Vista boot loader and this won't recognise both installs, so it won't give you the choice of which O/S to boot into.

There may be ways around this, tools etc you can use to change the boot loader after you have installed XP but again I have not done this in practice. I know we're talking about Win 7 here not Vista but i'd imagine a similar result would occur.

Tried the Win7 XP Mode that just got released?

Don't think it will be good for games, dunno how good the virtualziation is.

Not sure XP-mode can help me.
I'm having very specific driver problems in Cubase 5. Just want a partition for all my audio software to work in 32-bit with my audio drivers.

Have you looked at boot/partition managers on google. You might have to pay a little money.

You always need to install the earliest version of Windows first.

So Windows XP and then Windows 7.

you can put the raid drivers on a windows xp disk and it will automatically install them, or get an old floppy drive, and put the drivers on the floppy. they are the only 2 ways

Slightly contradicting Eulogy, if you install vista/7 then XP, it will install the XP boot loader and XP will boot fine. Vista/7 will become difficult to access.

Next up, if windows XP isn't at the very start of the drive in the first partition it will be unhappy. This can be worked around but it's a lot easier to just let it have its way. So if you install vista on the first partition, then XP on the second, you'll lose access to vista and XP wont boot.

Grub is the easiest solution for me, as it tends to deal with such things well. Including XP in the second partition. If you don't have a linux distribution installed to take over the booting arrangements you can use grub4dos instead.

nlite to put raid drivers on an xp iso is a good trick, and well worth doing if you install often or don't have a floppy drive
