Trouble installing modem on vista

I have a sagem F@st 800 modem which i've been using on this pc with xp for a long time. With my new build I have vista and after searching the internet I found all sorts of things to try but none of them work

I downloaded the vista compatible drivers and followed Tiscali's guide to installing the drivers :

Everything installs fine but when i get to the part that says plug in your modem, i get 'found new hardware'. I tell it to find the drivers, which it does, but then says it cant find the modem???

I can't see how im going to get online on my new pc? The modem is a usb one, is there any way to get around it?

Buy a wireless router and save yourself bags of hassle, you'll probably sync at a higher rate, its scalable (ie more than one machine via ethernet/wireless) and no more drivers (apart from your ethernet card of course).

So it is as simple as swapping over to an ethernet router? Will there be any line issues or anything like that?
