I'm not a retard, I can read fine, but often I will think about something while still reading and then I'll notice a word and realize that I've just read a quarter of the page without taking it in. This is annoying because I then have to go back and read it again rather than continuing to progress through the book. Is this common, is there any particular methods to stop this?

Possibly, I'm reading GoT but I've seen it on telly. Some bits are really gripping but some I guess allow me to wander as I already know or can remember what is happening.

I get this sometimes but I find when I'm reading a really good book, it's not a problem... Ok, this is just an excuse for me to recommend We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver. I love that book.

It's just a sign that you're not really engaging with the text. There's clearly something about it which just isn't interesting you.

Which is fine. I'm doing a Scottish Literature degree (well joint honours will Film and TV) and I've read a number of books which I hated but had to force myself through for the sake of the course and I experienced what you're talking about a lot.

So yeah, it's common. Pretty sure it happens to everyone.

Don't dismiss it as meaning the book isn't for you. Your mind will naturally wander. You could read the best book in the world and it could still happen.

But surely if you find your mind wandering most of the time because the prose style just is something you can't get along with then the book isn't for you?

Just switch up the book you're reading, I find some I can't put down and some I can't focus and get into.

I just finished reading Day by Day Armageddon by JL Bourne and highly recommend it.

Happens to me quite a lot.

It's not because I'm not engaging with the book, I've always struggled to read when there is a mash of words in front of me, that's when I find my mind wonders.

I've got better as I've read more over the last few years, I really can't do books that have a small font and have a lot of lines though :(

You're putting words in my mouth now. I never said it happened 'most of the time', just often, about 2-4 times an hour. From other comments it seems like it's just something that happens. I'm quite stressed at the moment which may be a cause for not being able to keep my mind clear.

If you're stressed, perhaps you're also feeling a bit restless?

Are you getting enough exercise, if you have pent up energy it could be difficult to relax properly.

I wasn't talking about you specifically in that post...

That only happens with me when i'm really tired, or if i have something else on my mind. Are you only reading last thing in bed? And obviously don't try to read if you're not in the mood for it.

Strange, I have the opposite problem. I tend to block out the whole world and live and die with the characters. It's only when black smoke waffles from the kitchen I snap back.

But as others said, the book might not be for you. Try the Troy series by David Gemmell for some easy, light and enjoyable reading. He can do with a sentence what other writers struggle to do with a whole page.

Aye, maybe. But there's a vast difference between "most of the time" and "2-4 times an hour", which is more along the lines that I was thinking.
