Hi all,

Just recieved and installed a new wireless router from Virgin M for my new 50MB package, currently downstairs is wired direct to router and upstairs is wireless with a wireless PCI card, 50mb internet connection downstairs 20MB upstairs.

Both computers are running Windows 7 Ultimate 64, downstairs a genuine copy, upstairs the old 7100 evaluation copy.

Now I just can't seem to get both PC's to connect or "see" each other via Homegroup?

Do they both need to be wireless or is it a router setting or such?

Any hints, tips, help, or ideas?

Thanks,
Steve

Are you sure both computers are members of the same Homegroup? When you set one up it gives you a password to add other Windows 7 machines to that group.

You can also check that the two PCs are talking to each other by pinging one from the other. Open up a CMD prompt [type cmd in the search bar in the Start Menu] and in the prompt type

ping <ip address of other computer>

You can also do ping <computer name> if you don't know the IP.

For example:

ping 192.168.1.10

ping lounge-pc

Hi,

I had set both to the same homegroup/password but both the upstairs and downstairs state there are no other people on the homegroup.

I have removed homegroup from the upstairs to see if a homegroup will appear in the network settings with the option of joining but nothing.

The last time I did this it was pretty straight forward? But my old router was no use with video transfer.

Here is my ping result,

Ok I have managed to see my other PC but not on the Homegroup.

When I look at my Network I see the upstairs PC, and via the network I can see the downstairs PC upstairs, at the moment it is off so comes up in the bottom left as unable to connect, but there is an unknown between this computer and the little pic of the router on my network? Is this unknown normal?

Earlier I managed to watch a movie via Media Centre, but I cannot seem to get any proper library set up?

How do you mean 50mb upstairs, 20mb downstairs?

Like PhillyDee said do you have 2 separate connections?

If you do and your using 2 separate routers and trying to connect them you will need to turn DHCP off on one of them, i am not sure how working with 2 connections will work though

I have a computer downstairs. W7 Ultimate 64bit genuine copy.

I have a computer upstairs. W7 Ultimate trial 64bit (does the shut down thing every couple of hours or so).

I have a single wireless router connected to my moddem, both part of the 50mb Virgin Media package.

The router is a D-Link 615, the downstairs is wired directly to this and gets a full 50mb online connection when tested via speedtest.net. The upstairs is connected via an old Asus Wireless PCI card and gets around 20mb online connection when tested via speedtest net (which I think is card related?).

I can see both computers in the network but not in Homegroup. I want to share all media/documents etc throughout the home pc's from a main PC so every movie, album, pic etc shows up in each PC's media player, documents etc.

You'd need to manually choose which connection you want to choose with a default route.

Unless you get some kind of load-balancing hardware ofc.

OK I understand now. He has one 50mb line, but he only gets 20mb on the upstairs machine. That would be the wifi/pci-card limit I guess.

Can you browse folders on the other machine if you go into Network and double click the machine?

Yes I can browse the other files inc reading and writing and modifying. Today I have deleted and re-directed libray locations to see if that allows upstairs to show and play media from the music and movie libraries which it does to some extent, currently Windows Media Player is not locating or accessing my other music library.

Edit,

Today the option showed up giving me the option to join a homegroup, my other PC's homegroup, except it will not join, one of the problems that comes up in diagnostics is that my system time is different from my local standard time? Yet both PC's are set for the same automatic time zone and won't seem to auto configure though they both show the same time?

OK another edit,

Finally managed to get Homegroup set up.

Still have a few problems, I really am not happy with both PC's also being part of a network which is allowing reading and writing/deleting of all files including non shared and admin etc.

All I required was the Homegroup sharing for read only from each PC of specific files.

I cannot seem to get upstairs Media Player to access my downstairs music folder through library management, music seems to not exist or have any library option at all, which makes homegroup and network my only options. Yet I can direct Media player to my music Video Library on the downstairs PC?

My Movies seems unable to connect and update leaving me with many missing movie covers.
